uwlog.com is a reference to the marine life divers meet and the places they meet it. This page sets out where the information comes from, how the ratings are calculated, what is deliberately not published, and how to correct something that is wrong.
Three sources, and every page says which it is drawing on: dives recorded in the logbook, published work with the paper attributed, and direct experience by a named person.
Each species carries a difficulty rating from 1 to 5 per location, because the same animal is a different proposition in different places. 1 means found on most dives that look for it; 5 means a handful of records.
A rating starts as an editorial estimate. Once enough dives have been logged at that location it is replaced by the calculated figure, and the species page states which of the two it is showing. Nothing is presented as data until it is data.
Which dive site a species is on. Species pages give the destination and the habitat, because naming the exact spot a rare animal sits on is how it gets crowded and moved on. Also: unconfirmed identifications, and anything from an individual diver’s logbook.
Pages carry a revision date. When something is corrected the change is noted at the foot of that page rather than quietly overwritten. If something here is wrong, the contact page is the fastest way to say so.
