Transparent with white saddles and orange-black tail spots, on a large anemone.
A shrimp to about 4 cm, the body clear glass marked with a small number of large opaque white patches, and a tail fan carrying four or five round orange spots each ringed in black. Females are the larger and more heavily marked; males are smaller and can be almost entirely transparent. It is the commonest anemone shrimp on the large host anemones here and the pattern is unmistakable. It was moved out of Periclimenes into Ancylocaris, so most field guides still list it under the old name, and a fair number of online sources put it in Ancylomenes, which is a different genus and a different set of shrimps.
Lives on the oral disc and among the tentacles of the big anemones — the same hosts as the anemonefish and the porcelain crab, and often all three on one animal — and is unaffected by the stinging cells. Usually one to three shrimps on a host. It cleans, and small fish will present themselves to it. Recorded from the shallows to about 30 m. Being transparent it needs light from the side to have an outline at all, and the tail spots are the part of it that reliably reads in a photograph.
