To about 1.2 m, mottled brown and green with a dark margin to the dorsal and anal fins. The character that names it is inside the mouth: the lining is purple-grey, where the spotted moray’s is pale, and that is how the two are separated when they are both mottled and both in a hole.
Same hazard as every moray, and the same reason. It bites a hand it cannot see. It does not attack divers.
