A silvery grunt described in 2021 and known only from the Revillagigedo Archipelago. It has no established English name; this one follows the site's own convention.
To about 30 cm. Silvery overall, with dark scale centres giving a spotted look, a yellow sheen over the rear third of the body and the tail base, and dark to grey dorsal, anal, tail and pelvic fins. It shoals over rock.
This entry has to be honest about a gap. The species was separated from the burrito grunt in 2021 on measurements, fin and scale counts and earlier genetic work, not on anything visible in the water, and no published character distinguishes the two by eye. At the Revillagigedo Islands a large silvery Anisotremus is this species; a photograph taken elsewhere is not identifiable as one on colour and pattern alone. The STRI database entry for it repeats the burrito grunt’s text, including a maximum size of 90 cm, which is why the size above comes from FishBase instead. Its juvenile has not been described. It is named for the Mexican parasitologist Gerardo Pérez Ponce de León. Fishing is prohibited throughout the national park.
