A small barred triplefin endemic to the archipelago, resting on open rock and moving in short hops.
To about 3 cm. Three sets of paired reddish-brown to blackish bars with pale spaces between them, an intense black band on the tail base, and a small dark blotch just behind the top of the pectoral fin base. Males carry blackish on the outer part of the first dorsal fin and on the tail. The head is large for the body, with small unbranched cirri over the nostrils and eyes and a few spines between the eyes. The island triplefin is the other small barred fish on this rock: it has five single irregular bars rather than three paired sets, and an ordinary brown bar rather than a black band on the tail base.
Rock from one to twenty metres, perched on the bottom, feeding on shrimps, crabs, snails, bivalves and worms. Eggs are hemispherical and anchored in algae by sticky threads, and the larvae are in the plankton close inshore. Recorded only from the Revillagigedo Islands. Described in 1992. Listed as Vulnerable.
