A column about 15 cm high and 30 cm across with an oral disc to about 40. Over a hundred stout smooth tentacles, often with purple, rose or pale tips, on a column that may be white, blue, pink, orange, pale red or light brown.

The corkscrew anemone has white spiral bands on its tentacles, which this one does not.

Shallow reef, lagoon and rock crevices, usually attached to something hard. It hosts cleaner shrimps, including both the spotted and the Pederson cleaner shrimp, and works as a cleaning station.

It stings. The nematocysts are reported to cause severe pain, so this is one to look at rather than touch.

Ratings are per location: 1 means found on most dives that look for it, 5 means a handful of records. Where enough dives have been logged the figure is calculated from them; otherwise it is an editorial estimate, and says so. We publish habitat and destination, not the dive site.
