Small, bright, fast fish that live in a hole in the reef and are visible for about a second at a time. Bold in behaviour and difficult to photograph for the same reason.
Most hold a small territory around one crevice and return to it constantly, so the method is to find the hole and wait rather than to follow the fish. Several are aggressive well beyond their size and will see off much larger fish.
Some can change colour to match the damselfish they are hunting among, which lets them approach the juveniles they eat. The hulafish of temperate Australia are filed here and behave differently: they hover in loose clouds at cave mouths rather than holding a crevice.
