Algae grazers with a small mouth and, in most species, a habit of moving in pairs. Every one of them carries venomous spines in the dorsal, anal and pelvic fins, which is unusual for a fish that is otherwise this inoffensive.
The foxface and its relatives change colour within seconds when alarmed or at night, from clean yellow to a blotched brown that does not resemble the daytime fish at all. A rabbitfish photographed at night is often unrecognisable from the same fish by day.
The venom matters when a fish is handled or caught, not in the water. The sting is painful and hot water is the usual first aid, as with the scorpionfish.
